Restoring mission-critical cooling of main Trading Floor

a) Asset & Context

The Deutsche Börse AG is one of the world’s leading exchange organizations, operating critical financial market infrastructure. Its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main includes highly sensitive trading environments, where stable indoor climate conditions are essential for uninterrupted operations.

The main trading floor, as a mission-critical space, requires precise and reliable cooling at all times.

Winfried Haas was called in under urgent conditions when the cooling of the primary trading hall failed to perform adequately, resulting in significantly elevated temperatures and posing a risk to ongoing operations.

b) Strategic & Execution

Winfried Haas conducted a rapid, structured technical analysis of the entire cooling system, focusing on:

  • the performance and control logic of the Air Handling Units (AHUs)
  • the operation of the chillers
  • the interaction with the existing ice-based Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system

Through targeted measurements, system diagnostics, and operational analysis, he identified critical faults in the control strategy and system integration between generation, storage, and distribution.

The scope of work included:

  • On-site measurement and system performance analysis
  • Functional assessment of the ice thermal storage system
  • Identification of control and operational deficiencies
  • Immediate corrective actions and system optimization

c) Outcome & Value

By resolving the identified issues, the cooling performance of the system was fully restored, ensuring stable and reliable climate conditions within the trading hall.

Key value delivered:

  • Immediate stabilization of a mission-critical environment
  • Restoration of proper thermal comfort and operational safety
  • Improved coordination between chillers, storage, and air-side systems
  • Enhanced reliability of the overall cooling infrastructure

The project demonstrates how deep system understanding and rapid technical intervention can resolve critical failures in complex, integrated cooling systems—particularly in high-stakes environments such as financial trading facilities.
