Energy Efficiency Retrofit for Chiller System of Data Center

Efficiency retrofit of major cooling system with high-efficiency chillers

Asset & Context

q.beyond AG operates german-wide high-availability data centers providing critical digital infrastructure services.

As energy-intensive assets with continuously rising cooling demand, data centers face increasing pressure to reduce energy consumption, operating costs, and carbon emissions while maintaining maximum reliability.

In 2024, one of q.beyond’s major data center sites in Hamburg required a targeted upgrade of its cooling infrastructure to address ageing equipment and improve overall energy performance.

Strategy & Execution

The project focused on an energy efficiency retrofit of the chiller system, replacing the existing unit with a state-of-the-art, high-efficiency chiller designed to meet the data center’s specific load profile and operational requirements.

The assignment included development of the energy efficiency concept under the German funding programme “Wettbewerb Energieeffizienz”, preparation of the required expert report for the funding application, coordination of all authority-related communication, and verification of the correct use of subsidies following installation.

Outcome & Value

The retrofit resulted in a significant reduction in energy consumption, lower operational costs, and a measurable decrease in the data center’s carbon footprint.

By combining technical optimisation with structured grant optimisation and post-installation verification, the project improved long-term cooling efficiency while ensuring full compliance with public funding requirements.
